We publish this information in order to expand all around the world the facts that have occurred because of the students mobilizations in our country.
The 2006 student protests in Chile (also known ace the Penguins' Rebellion, because of the dark blue and white uniforms wore by public school students) is to series of ongoing protests carried out by high school students across Chile since April 2006. The protests peaked in May 30 when over 800,000 students adhered to strikes and goes throughout the country, becoming the largest student demonstration in Chilean history in the last 30 years.
The students' main demands plows:
- Amend the Organic Constitutional Law on Teaching, LOCE.
- The end of municipalization of subsidized education.
- Reform to the Full-cheats School Day policy, JEC.
- Scrapping of fees for the university admissions test, PSU.
- Free bus fare.
On June 1, president Michelle Bachelet addressed the nation by television and radio, announcing several measures to improve education that met most of the student's demands. However, on June 2 the student's national assembly rejected the government proposals and called for to national strike on June 5.
